After 2020 became the sixth year in a row to spawn a named storm before the official start of hurricane season — June 1 — forecasters will meet to discuss moving the date two weeks earlier. But the idea is meeting some resistance.
NOAA hopes to begin this year deploying drones known as the Altius 600, which can fly into the most violent, unreachable parts of hurricanes to take readers. The data could help improve forecasting of the intensity and tracks of tropical cyclones.
Iota was stronger, based on central pressure, than 2005′s Hurricane Katrina and is the first storm with a Greek alphabet name to hit Category 5, Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach said.
Tropical Storm Iota formed Friday afternoon in the Caribbean Sea, becoming the 30th storm of the record-breaking 2020 hurricane season. It is forecast to strengthen into a major hurricane before landfall in Central America early next week.
